I hope I'm not teaching my grandmother to suck eggs here but have you
told OpenOffice which version of Java to use? It's weird but even if
there's only one version installed on your system OOo still has to be
explicitly told to use it. Go to Tools>Options>OpenOffice.org>Java. Wait
several seconds (sometimes 30 or so) while the list of possible versions
is populated. Then tick (check) "Use a Java runtime environment" and
also ensure the version you want to use has its radio button "down" (has
a black dot inside it).
