This is a quite normal behavior for unix programs. You are going to see it in some other linux programs. If you don't like it, you can use a clipboard manager program to get around it. Glipper is a nice one for Ubuntu and other Gnome based distros. It will keep the last couple of clipboards entry available to any program. If you like it you probably want to add it to your session (so that it starts when you login) in System-> Preferences -> Sessions.
