On the Mac, the provided binaries come as a 'bundle' that can be
dragged to wherever the user wishes. The name of the bundle, by
default, includes the version number. Thus, several versions of
OpenOffice will happily coexist in the same directory. The user can,
of course, drag any unused bundles to the trash.
The various Linux distributions have different package managers,
but in general should remove any old versions in favor of a new one.
All bets are off when compiling from source, as then it would be
possible to install OpenOffice in alternate directories.
Thanks for that.
