My point is that you can't do this. Once you've selected something, there's no way (short of editing an XML file) to reset that character feature to automatic. The best you can do is set it to whatever the default currently is and then hope you never decide to change the default.

You would creating very unusual documents if there is no searchable feature that you know you would never use in your text (such as “blinking” perhaps?) All you need is one searchable feature that you won't use otherwise than for searching styles.

I agree that this is a decent workaround.  It just chafes.
