Which program were you using for the download? Internet Explorer and similar
are not the best tools for the job for the reasons you have discovered.

It is better to use a download manager. They are programs that can continue
the download from where it left off if you lose your internet connection.

Personally, I usually use Opera, which is a web browser that has an inbuilt
download manager.
