Just to close off the thread, I finally got so desperate that I backed
up my live data, and reset to factory status, only to find that, after
installing only about 1/8 of my regular software, the MS Installer
crapped out again. My best guess is that some MS pushed fix broke the
Installer. This is the third Windows machine I've had fall apart on me
in three years.
Screw it.
It's going to be sheer Hell, but, fortunately, the old machine is
working enough for me to transfer my data. The worst part will be
replacing my DeLorme stuff, but between Google Earth and the Palm/
Tomtom package, I'll get by.
