Please note that in general chapters begin with an odd number since they are supposed to be a right page in a printed book. If you start with an even number, OOo will automatically insert a blank page for you. Of course this does not explain why you get a random number. Some questions that may help troubleshooting the issue: - do you use a master document? - if you do not use a master document, have you collated all the chapters in a single big file? - did you try to hit F9 to refresh the fields? - is 24 (or 106) the number of pages of the chapter? - how many page styles do you use?
