I am currently using OOo 2.3, but over the weekend I plan to upgrade my
Gutsy x86_64 computer to Hardy, which will automatically upgrade OOo to
2.4.

The problem is that my university has deployed OOo 2.2 on all
university computers, including those in student computer labs and
classrooms, all of which run Windows XP. Later this term I am going to
have to do a class presentation that will require Impress. I'd rather
not export to PDF, although I will do so as a backup option. The
university computers also all have Microsoft Office 2003, but I don't
want to depend on an export to Powerpoint, although I will do so also
as another backup option. I can also connect my own computer to the
projector in the classroom, but that is even chancier.

Will OOo 2.2/Windows be able to open my Impress 2.4/Linux file?

Hello, I may be wrong but I do not remember any major feature being added to
Impress between OOo 2.2 and OOo 2.4. The motion path animation was fixed, a
slight problem preventing the return to the normal mode from the master view
and possibly some other little things.

So I guess that 99% of the presentation will be backwards compatible (unless
you are very fond of the motion path animation of course :-)

To be double sure you can still install version 2.2 on your computer in
parallel to version 2.4 and make the compatibility test at home.

OO.o file wise 2.4 <-->2.2 is really not an issue. It is in 3.0 that the new file formats will be picked up ( ODF1.2 ) with OO.o2.4 set to read, but not write, some ( maybe all ) of the new format already.

One cautionary note - on the Gutsy forum there are a few people reporting problems with the upgrade in relation to OO.o ( I am one of them ) it looks like the issues are on the x86-64 platform with KDE4 ( so the remix release in other words ). Impress isn't mentioned in any of the issues by the way, but you may want to scan over the forums there just to be sure.
