No. Just as you cannot just install MS Excel as a standalone program,
OpenOffice.org is an office suite.
Excel is available as a stand alone program.

For macintosh and windows, respectively.
For Windows at least,
so is Word:

Knocks our discussions, elsewhere, about modularity on the head a little
:-(
Perhaps our OOo developers could tell us what the consequences for the
OpenOffice suite as a whole would be if it were to be made truly modular, i
e, if the user could choose to install just Writer or Calc or whatever,
according to his or her needs. Would this necessarily involve many
reduplications, leading to product bloat, or could this be avoided ? If the
latter, perhaps this type of flexibility to users' needs is the way to go
?...

My impression is there's a core part, that contains functions shared
among the various apps and the components required by the individual
apps. Modules do not mean you can't have common components. Take a
look at the OOXML specs to see the disaster caused by bundling discrete
apps into one package and calling them "integrated".
