I have an interesting installation situation: I downloaded OpenOffice
and tried to run it on my computer. I got a message "The installer you
are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete. This could be the result
of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus. You may want to contact
the author of this installer to obtain a new copy. It may be possible to
ski[p this check using the /NCRC command line switch. (NOT RECOMMENDED)"
Prior to getting this message on my computer, I installed Open Office
using the very same download on a colleague's laptop and it worked just
fine. So I redownloaded the software again but I still get the same
message and I get the message on yet another laptop as well. Has anyone
any suggestions as to how to handle this? I de-installed my older
version of OO.

This is almost certain to be caused by your Antivirus (AV) and/or firewall
software believing the downloaded file is malware. To fix it:
1. Disconnect your computer from the net - pull the modem/router plug from
the phone socket.
2. Disable your AV and firewall.
3. Run the installation procedure; you won't be able to register because
you aren't connected so just say "register later".
4. Enable AV and firewall.
5. Connect to the net; never leave your computer connected to the net if
your AV and firewall are not both running properly.
If you still have no joy, come back here with details and we'll have
another think.
