I'm not sure what you did, but the usual process, assuming you're running Windows, is to go to www.openoffice.org and download the latest Windows version. Then, double click on the downloaded file to start the installation process. That will take you through several configuration panels. When that is complete, there should be an OpenOffice folder and icons in your Start menu. Use the icons to start the various OpenOffice components.
