OpenOffice.org (OOo) 2.4.1 provides additional security updates/fixes,
improved performance, and additional features. I highly recommend that
you update to the latest version; click on the green "Download
OpenOffice.org" tab to start the download.

As some others on this list have already told you, you can perform many
of the same (and in most cases many more) functions in OOo as you can in
MS Publisher. You can indeed create flyers and mailers, newsletters, and

Should you actually require a professional dedicated Desktop Publishing
program, Scribus (as recommended by others) is free and opensource. For
commercial DTP I'd recommend Adobe. That said, there is no reason that
you cannot continue to use your existing MS Publisher (if you have a
licenced copy) and use OOo as well.
