Marginalia is probably the best approach. Just make sure you anchor the page to the relevant paragraph and set the vertical alignment correctly. Unfortunately footnotes cannot have a different number of columns than the main page and it seems this is not going to change any time soon: http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=62845 As a substitute for the footnotes you may want to set a cross reference in the main text and then insert a cross reference with the footnote text in the marginalia.
