Alternatively:

To stop the recovery process, you can delete the file
"C:\Documents and settings/<user>/Application
data/Openoffice.org2/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/Recovery.xcu"
where "<user>" is the username you use to log on with.

Beware, it resets the settings for Autosave in the
Tools>Options>Load/Save>General dialog.
