Hello HS,

I have actually discovered a major flaw in my proposal, that is: the
subfigure caption comes before the figure caption so it doesn't quite
work as I was hoping.

I will try to describe a bit more what I had in mind:
Insert the sub figures in two separate cells of a borderless table.
Instead of the auto caption, insert a numbered item and demote it to
level 2 for the sub pictures. Insert then under the borderless table a
level 1 numbered item (main caption).
THe numbered items are elements of a list style configured such as:
- level 1 is numbered, text before is Figure, text after nothing
- level 2 is numbered with a, b, c text before ( text after ), it does
not show sub-levels and starts at 1.

Hope this makes clearer and maybe inspire you to find a solution.

Note: I remember a discussion on the same subject some months ago, but
don't remember the conclusions... maybe it is worthwhile searching the
list archives.

Cheers,

Michele
