It depends:-)

If you just want to use an email address, which the user has not in his
account, then you need only a version, which supports changing it.
We have used this with earlier versions than 2.3.17 (sorry, don't
remember, when exactly we enabled it).
Only if you want to be able to set one of the email addresses of the
user too, then you need 2.3.17.

On the V3 demo site from Inverse this function is not available.
Not sure, if it is not implemented or just disabled though.
I did not yet test this function in V3 myself.

BTW:
Since SOGo 2.0.5 you should have switched to using sogo.conf instead of
GNUstepDefaults.
I once had problems with another setting before changing this.
Especially using sogo-tool will not work without sogo.conf.
Therefore you should switching first.
A HowTo is included in the documentation in chapter "10. Upgrading".
If you still can not change this setting, then upgrade.

Kind regards,
Christian Mack

PS:
I would upgrade anyway, as 2.3.17 provides a lot of additional functions
and fixes a lot of bugs.
