Easy to test. Go to a command line, and run nslookup. From the > prompt, type: Server DNS-SERVER-NAME-OR-IP
Then type in any domain you want to query. If it returns a valid address it's working. I think DNS servers cache lookups by default. What's referred to as a "caching server" is a DNS server that just does lookups for you - it isn't authoritative for your domain - i.e., you don't enter any host records in it. That said, there's no reason an authoritative server such as you have already won't work fine for you as long as it's using the root servers to resolve lookups and not forwarding the request to a public DNS server. The reason folks recommend a caching server is they're easy to set up, and low overhead because they're usually on the same box as the mail server. You'll incur a bit of network traffic if you have it on a separate box, but no more than you have now. If you want a DNS on your mail host, I expect you could just install DNS on the 2003 server and you'd be fine. I do have a simple used DNS (windows version) running from some local names. I don't think I have it set up correctly as I don't see any cache information and I think I should. My uncle's not named Bob, it is Roy. -- View this message in context: http://spamassassin.1065346.n5.nabble.com/New-at-SpamAssassin-how-to-not-get-headers-tp110712p110735.html Sent from the SpamAssassin - Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com.
