I understand. My perspective is that the ASF is not one single community, but a collection of communities. Each project has its own community that is free to choose their mailing list policies, revision-control system (kind of), etc. Not all ASF projects use the same programming language(s), documentation strategies, etc. Singling-out mailing lists is kind of cherry-picking. One could complain about quite a few things.
