You're right, not the RPM, but I'm using the Debian apt package. I'll
give your suggestion a try. Most of the stuff in /usr/share/tomcat5 is
soft-linked to the /var/lib stuff, but not everything (e. g., the common
and server directories aren't). I'll try that. Whether to use the
Debian apt package or not was something of a decision that I pondered a
bit. On the one hand, using apt fits the overall Debian maintenance
practices and mostly automates updates, etc., while on the other hand,
it takes a lot of the flexibility of configuration, custom building,
etc. out of a particular installation. If your suggestion doesn't work,
I'll rethink my apt-package decision.

I tried this: jar -tvf | grep ajp13 in both common and server
directories, and got nothing.

Thanks, and Regards

It seems that you are using Tomcat from RPM package or something. Some
prepacked one.
The problem might be in different directories for CATALINA_BASE and
CATALINA_HOME.
Hava you tried to put CATALINA_BASE to /usr/share/tomcat5 ?

Anyway, I would recommend you to install original Tomcat (from
Apache.org) and see does the problem stay.
