Have you tried with :

#foreach($item in $results)
$item.getObject('Contacts.ContactClass')
$item.display('firstname') | $item.display('lastname') |
$item.display('phone1') <br />
#end

or

#foreach($item in $results)
$item.getObject('Contacts.ContactClass')
$item.firstname | $item.lastname | $item.phone1 <br />
#end

?
