John,
This cross-posted message from Andy Johnson is grossly in error. Ehlers
bill would NOT "force all businesses contracting with NASA and certain
other agencies".
In fact:
- It deals only with "any transaction between the Federal agency and
another person providing for such person to perform scientific or
engineering research with Federal funding". Note that it affects only
funded research!
- It could result in companies getting fined for using the metric
system! It states that such research funding contracts must include
provisions....
= "(1) clearly identifying the extent to which the metric system of
measurement or other
systems of measurement will be used" [Note the "or other systems of
measurement"!],
= "(2) requiring the usage of systems of measurement consistent with
the provisions described in paragraph (1)", and
= "(3) assigning to the person receiving Federal funding the
financial responsibility for failure to follow the requirements stated
in paragraph (2)".
Nevertheless, it is a good bill because it CAN be used to enforce the
use of the metric system in research. It can also serve us as a
bellwether on Congress's reaction to bills on measurement requirements.
Before encouraging people to write to a congressional member to support
a bill, we should read the bill to make sure that those letters don't
come off as "missing the mark". That would only serve to make us look
illiterate, ill-advised, or like members of a rabble.
And I still would prefer that this list not be filled with cross-posted
messages. When I get the time to read the Yahoo messages on metrication,
I'll add that to my bookmark list.
