Dear Bill, John, and All,
For many years the Australian Broadcasting Commission fielded numerous
complaints every Saturday when they mispronounce the names of tiny country
towns when they gave the football results. Then some imaginative bureaucrat
(if that isn't an oxymoron?) decided that the names of each town would be
pronounced according to the usage of the local people. They have had very
few complaints since then.
I have always regretted that they haven't followed the same practice for the
names of the world's nations.
Cheers,
Pat Naughtin
