I agree with you.  To do so, you would have to get rid of all devices that
are calibrated in these units and replace them with ones calibrated strictly
in SI units.

Don't confuse my agreement with a suggestion to make a pound equal to 500 g
meaning I want to retain such a unit.   I believe that the pound should not
be a legal unit for trade.  But we can't force people to use SI.  Thus to
make it easier on ourselves we force them to make their units equal to
something simple in ours.  Thus when they speak theirs, we can easily
convert it to ours.  We only compromise or accept theirs as a slang term and
not an officially legal unit.
