Dear John and All,
Just a couple of points on this issue.
The practice in Germany (in the 1820s?) was clearly to encourage the use of
the 500�gram pfund. This has not lead to the death of the pfund.
The French experience was similar, even though the use of the livre was more
informal rather than legal. The French experience is also that using a livre
of 500�grams has not lead to the death of the livre.
In the light of these experiences, I don't think that it is a good idea to
promote the idea of a 500�gram pound.
