Carleton asked in USMA 23856:
Help, list! This is from another list. What he is referring to by "tractive effort" is pulling power. I know "lb" isn't correct, but I want to make sure what IS correct before responding.
"Buff strength" refers to the force the end of the car can withstand before structural failure.
Thanks
Carleton
think a Genesis loco has less then 100,000 lb tractive effort. All Amtrak
cars have 800,000 lb buff strength. (Acela 1,200,000)
An engineer would use pound-force. A 19th century physicist
would use the poundal. 32.2 poundals = 1 pound-force
