Solution: Define ton as 1 000 kg at first appearance in a text and use
ton, so defined, for the remainder of the text.

The megagram is not even an SI unit.  It is a multiple of a submultiple
of the kilogram.  i.e. E6 x E-3 kg = E3 kg = 1 ton.
