What is the *range* of values that you have in mind? If your examples cover the *entire* range above, I would use the "E" format applied to kg. I would use the first five for submultiples (in the absence of quantities other than mass) in that range; and, the final five for multiples (again in the absence of quantities other than mass) if the range is from kg to Gt, and I would write ton rather than tonne for simplicity. If other quantities were involved in either range, I would again use the "E" format applied to kg for coherence in equations. Gene.
