Nat Hager asked in USMA 244575:

One more question on the same vein:

What's 3-phase, and what's the main advantage in efficiency? (as opposed to
split-phase or "4-phase", if such a thing existed).

I know it's universal for overland power transmission.

Nat

In 3-phase the phases are separated by 120 between each pair of
phases. With 3 phases it is easy to produce a rotating magnetic
field in an induction motor which does not require brushes. 3-phase
may have other advantages, but I am not an electrical engineer.

There are no 4-phase systems.
