The U.S. armed forces use metric units for all measurements that 
might affect interoperations with other NATO forces.  General 
MacArthur, when he was running Japan, speeded up Japan's conversion 
to total metric usage.

In 1960 in Bethesda, Md,.I asked a man, presumably a military 
officer, where was the (then) Bureau of Standards. He directed me, 
using meters
