I am afraid that Terry Simpson in USMA 25365 misunderstaood my posing, so I will
rephrase my thoughts:

>Terry implies that scientific research done prior to 1948, and some
done after that, is not uselful.

Old research is useful. I did not intend to imply that it is not.

Where else than in the SI brochure could a student find
authoritative definitions of erg, dyne, poise, stokes, gauss,
oersted, maxwell, stilb, phot, gall, micron and metric
carat?

That question presupposes that I think that units not current should be in the SI brochure. I don't think they should be in the SI brochure.

Terry apparently understood the exact oppposite of what I tried to express, so I will rephrase my thoughs at greater length.

A scientist before doing a research should know what work has been done in his field. If he is a young student he may not know the metric system as it existed before 1948. He will meet the obsolete units that I listed in my previous note in the old research . He can find authoritative definitions of the obsolete units in the SI brochure. Terry would deny him this resource. It is not true that all relevant scientific research has been done since 1948.
