Pat, More precisely, the road construction committee in Australia chose to use the SI prefixes *milli*, *kilo*, or *no prefix* for the SI unit of length.
That is; millimeter (mm), meter (m), and kilometer (km) were chosen. This wording conforms with the statements in the BIPM Brochure that there is only one SI unit of length, the meter, which may be scaled up or down by application of an SI prefix selected from those listed in Table 5.
