Similarly, in the telecom industry in Canada and the US, a familiar expression is to say that the local telephone provider provides "the last mile" of connectivity between the customer's premise, and the local phone central office, even if the customer has purchased the service from a different telephone provider.
Instead of saying "the last mile", I always say, "the last kilometer". It doesn't matter if most people still say "the last mile", or not. Stephen Gallagher
