Because she weighed the lye in ounces rather than grams, even though her scale 
has a gram scale. I spent a few days with her, not just making soap, and that 
was my general impression.

I cook rice by volume, 100 mL per portion. When I wanted to cook rice at her 
place, though, she doesn't have a measuring cup, just various measuring 
spoons, and I picked the closest one in size.

I make soap by mass because the sap values are ratios of masses.
