Steve, you exaggerate.

I checked two reputable sources and both indicate that the use of "Union
Flag" is the preferred use, unless the flag is flown at sea.  The sites -
Her Majesty's website and the Prime Minister's website.

Some Euro "extremists" in the UK now refer to the EU flag as "The Union
