A VP of GM told me during the mid 1970s that all of GM cars at that time were made to metric specs except for the shock absorbers.

Jerry,

Do you have access to *any* motor vehicle made by GM, Ford, or Chrysler in the past ten years? If you do, check the nuts and bolts. You will discover that they have millimeter (not inch) threads. Automotive parts are made, interchangeably in millimeter sizes, in many countries throughout the world, and assembled is still other countries. Hence, almost everything is in millimeter sizes. One exception is wheel rim diameters.

  Pat,

Are you sure about all this metric being used in the
USA? Why would a company go to the bother of using
metric units in production just to hide them from
other companies and the public? Where do you get
  your information?

  Jerry
