It seems that while the southern hemisphere is experiencing a massive heat
wave, the northern hemisphere is experiencing a massive cold spell with lots of
snow. Just last week we had temperatures at -20°C then yesterday it warmed to
+10°C, a 30° change in just a few days. We have had the most snowy January in
ages where before most of it melted yesterday there was accumulations in the
middle of the yard of 50 cm and snow piles from shoveling at 1.5 m.

SEVERE WEATHER: POLAR FREEZE IN SPAIN, ALERT IN
SIX REGIONS

(ANSAmed) - MADRID, FEBRUARY 6 - Half of Spain
lies under a pall of snow after a freezing cold front hit the peninsula. The
state meteorological office is forecasting that the polar conditions will
continue throughout the weekend. And a state of alert has already been declared
in six areas: Madrid, Asturie, Cantabria, Paesi Baschi, Castilla y Leon and
Castilla-La Mancha, with twelve mountain passes closed in the centre and north
of the country. According to the general office for traffic, heavy snowfalls
have disrupted traffic on state and secondary road networks in Avila,
Barcelona,
Salamanca, Segovia and Santa Cruz di Tenerife. The worst disruption has
occurred
in the ring of suburbs around Madrid where snow has slowed traffic on the ring
roads linking the capital to areas in the south-west. Nonetheless, the effects
of the severe weather are not on the same scale as the disruption caused by a
thunderstorm one month ago, which brought traffic to a standstill and closed
Madrid's airport. (ANSAmed)

Subject: [USMA:42944] Aussie fires

I am sure we all send our sympathies to our Aussie friends, including Pat, for
the terrible fires they are experiencing. And I see that their temps hit
47º--same as we had in Northern California two summers ago. If you have never
been that hot--well, it is really, really hot. It made our swimming pool hit
34º at one point.

Carry on, Mate.
