(b) For all events up to and including 10km, drinking/sponging shall be provided at suitable intervals of approximately 2-3km if weather conditions warrant such provision. (c) For all events longer than 10km, refreshment stations shall be provided at approximately every 5km. In addition, drinking / sponging stations for water only shall be placed approximately midway between the refreshment stations or more frequently if weather conditions warrant such provision. See <http://www.iaaf.org/mm/Document/Competitions/TechnicalArea/04/95/59/2009030 3014358_httppostedfile_CompetitionRules2009_printed_8986.pdf> http://www.iaaf.org/mm/Document/Competitions/TechnicalArea/04/95/59/20090303 014358_httppostedfile_CompetitionRules2009_printed_8986.pdf for the full text. It has become commonplace in marathons for competitors to lace a fob into their shoes and for their times to be clocked at various points. Many athletes use these timings to check how they were going in the race. Top athletes are used to all-metric races so if they were clocked at 3 mile intervals, many would not enter the race, thereby detracting from it. Moreover, if the route does not have kilometre markings on it (See point 4 above), it will not comply with international standards, so presumably no world records can be set on it. _____ From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Kim, Rich (ECY) Sent: 20 April 2009 18:46 To: U.S. Metric Association Subject: [USMA:44785] RE: Boston Marathon results in metric Whoops, table did not format properly on the return.
