Here in Grass Valley, CA, the Sierra Trailblazers RC puts on a Draft
Horse Classic 10 km (a "10 K", as they say) race each September, and
distances are marked in km only. But this is thanks to yours truly and
handmade signs, and it often seems a lonely effort. But we did get
favorable comments last year on this aspect of the race. It is
frustrating that I work with a real estate guy who also has surveying
experience in setting up the course, and it like pulling teeth to get
him to work in meters rather than feet.

I've run in some 12k and half-marathon runs around the Pacific
Northwest (USA) and have never seen kilometer markers, even in the
runs that are 12 kilometers. It's good though, that they standardized
some races at 12 kilometers, for example Bloomsday which is this
Sunday. My guess is that I don't think we'll see kilometers on
smaller, local running events until the US changes to the metric
system for road distances.
