JS-MI - you probably realise that he already knows this (and the relevance of
imperial markers at the London and -most probably- Boston marathons). That's
a lot of food you're handing, over there ;-)

I think that has been answered, 5 km intervals, the half and the final time are
recorded.

With the use of chips, times can only be taken at official stations that have
the special mats to read the chips.

Are there any points where the runner is officially timed? It doesn't matter
as much as to what you see, but what happened behind the scenes and what is
shown in the official record book.

Just like in the London Flora marathon. The course is measured in metric and
certified in metric. Also all runners times are measured in metric at 5 km
intervals. If you are anti-metric there is no way you can know officially what
you non-metric times are as they are never measured nor recorded.

You can read the highlights here:

http://www.london-marathon.co.uk/site/mens2009.html

The majority of the times that dimensions are mentioned, it is kilometres.
Metric was even in the thoughts of the runners as one was quoted and thus spoke
in metres:

"It was a tough race today," he said. "All the good runners around make you run
well. It wasn't until the last 200 metres or so that I had the feeling that I
was going to win."

Yes, the winner thought in metric.

I’ve run in some 12k and half-marathon runs around the Pacific Northwest (USA)
and have never seen kilometer markers, even in the runs that are 12 kilometers.
It’s good though, that they standardized some races at 12 kilometers, for
example Bloomsday which is this Sunday. My guess is that I don’t think we’ll
see kilometers on smaller, local running events until the US changes to the
metric system for road distances.

The London Flora marathon is also metric and electronically times all the
results at the same distances.

You can check the results for the past years here:

http://www.london-marathon.co.uk/site/?pageID=2&article=40

Note, not a mile or foot to be found.

The people who survey and verify the route also do it in metric and 42.195 km
is the official and legal distance.
