Acutally, it has very little to do with confusing the consumer and everything to do with gaining shelf space in the supermarket. A supermarket (can be a corp. chain, co-op or franchise) will only dedicate so much space to a particular size of a product. As the manufacturers have paid the legalized extortion called slotting fees to the supermarket to provide space for their products, the manufacturers will then increase the variety and sizes of their products to gain that valuable space. If you go to a supermarket when they are stocking the shelves (usually overnight) you will notice that the supermarket employess do not stock Coke, Pepsi, Frito-Lay, etc. The local distributers will come in and do the stocking according to the marketing plan for those products.
