In my experience, Gene, chemists are very much in the practice of using
SI. I completed my BS Nat. Sci. in 1968 with a major in chemistry. We
used SI. The American Chemical Society requires SI in its articles.
The only group of scientists that I have come across who use old cgs
units such as the dyne and erg are American astronomers. Internationally
the IAU espouses SI. However American dollars represent the major influx
of funding for astronomical journals so American astronomers hold sway
in print.

Dr. Willie May has worked as a chemist for 43 years and “advanced

Chemists traditionally used centimeter-gram-second (cgs) units.
I can only hope Dr. May will vigorously promote SI, rather than cling to
cgs units with its dynes, ergs esu, emu, and the other out-dated metric
units associated with the cgs.
Secretary Pritzker of the Department of Commerce was a business woman,
not a scientist, but the global competition of world trade should be
enough to convince her to promote SI!

Secretary Pritzger (Pritzker?) is the person I wrote a letter to years
ago asking her to please support the metric-only update of the FPLA.
She is from Chicago and I thought that might help get her to pay
attention to my letter. But yet again another message to the powers
that be that get ignored.

_*NIST Director Gallagher Departs: Dr. Willie May to lead Agency*_
NIST staff, past and present, bid a fond farewell to Dr. Pat
Gallagher at a reception on June 12, 2014. After twenty one years
at NIST, Pat will begin his tenure as the Chancellor of the
University of Pittsburgh in September. Commerce Secretary Pritzger
sent the following e-mail to all NIST employees:
Dear NIST Team:
I regret not being able to join you yesterday as you recognize
and celebrate Pat Gallagher’s tenure as Under Secretary for
Standards and Technology and Director of NIST. As you know, Pat
has been an outstanding Director of NIST, Acting DOC Deputy
Secretary, and civil servant to our Nation. At a time when NIST
had a crisis, Pat stepped up and provided the steady hand of
leadership that was required. As I said earlier in the week, he
has been a great partner to me over this past year and I will miss
him tremendously.
But as with all great institutions, NIST has a very capable
leader, Dr. Willie May, ready to step in and fill this void.
Effective Monday June 16, 2014, Willie will officially be
designated Acting Under Secretary for Standards and Technology and
Acting Director of NIST. Willie brings tremendous leadership
ability and experience to this job, having started out as a bench
chemist at NIST nearly 43 years ago and steadily advanced through
the bureau. I know he will do an excellent job. So please join
me in giving Willie your full support.
Thank you for all the hard work you do every day.

identify opportunities and make matches on behalf of companies.
NIST anticipates making up to 10 awards at approximately $250,000
