How many people know which is bigger – an ounce of water or a fluid ounce of
water.

The imperial gallon (160 fluid ounces) was defined in 1824 as being the volume
of 10 pounds of water (160 ounces) at 62 °F (17 °C). If we are willing to
ignore the expansion of water between 4 °C and 17 °C, then one imperial fluid
ounce of water has a mass of one avoirdupois ounce. The US fluid ounce is 4.1%
larger than its imperial counterpart (but there are 16 US fluid ounces and a US
gallon, not 20 as in imperial measure).

What about a fluid ounce of petrol (gasoline) compared to an ounce of petrol?
Given that the specific gravity of petrol is about 0.755, an imperial fluid
ounce of petrol has a mass of about 0.75 avoirdupois ounces and a US fluid
ounce has a mass of about 0.80 avoirdupois ounces.

Now think about mercury which has a specific gravity of 13.6. A fluid ounce of
mercury would have a mass of between 13.6 and 14 avoirdupois ounces (I am not
going to work out the exact amount).

The US dry pint (The imperial dry pint was identical to the imperial fluid
pint) adds to the confusion. The US dry pint has a volume of about 550 mL which
is almost the same as the imperial pint (568 mL) and a lot more than the US
fluid pint (473 mL).

I think that this little discourse shows the stupidity of having a unit of
capacity and a unit of mass with almost the same name and also the stupidity of
the British and the Americans having units of capacity that have the same
names, but different sizes.

Yet, the very next command in the commercial is in “ounces.”

A good argument CAN be made that many users of legacy units don’t have a grasp
on the difference between ounces and fluid ounces! Product labeling is clear,
but understanding is not! Yes, the participant and the viewers know that we are
talking about 35 fluid ounces, since the subject is water.
