The difference in prices could well be the way in which new cars are marketed in the UK with fleet owners being able to negotiate large discounts from suppliers that the little man does not see. In addition, with Ireland having switched over to using km and km/h on their roads, they have effectively segmented the European car market into three areas - LHD, RHD+mph, RHD+km/h. The two RHD regimes only cover one country (ignoring Cyprus and Malta) so a marketing model that hits the little man cannot be subverted by the little man going across the border in the way that a Frenchman could go to say Spain or Germany.

I figure it must have something to do with the market available for both new and used in the UK compared to the rest of Europe.
