Hi Steve,

If you wish to use GPS for logging distance travelled, your apparatus will
consist of four main parts – the GPS receiver which gets signals from the
satellites, a set of three accelerometers which measure your car’s acceleration
and by double integration can calculate distance travelled, a microprocessor
which collects both the GPS and accelerometer readings and performs the double
integration using the GPS signal to filter out the constants of integration and
finally the odometer store itself which collects and stores the ongoing
calculated distances covered.

As you can see, GPS is very complex compared to counting revolutions and is
only really effective if you are worried about the change in tyre diameter as
the tyre wears out affecting the accuracy of your measurement.

I agree - and there’s a mechanism for detecting a fast puncture which uses the
chosen method of reading from the driveshaft to alert the driver

Many of my cars have mechanicals ones however I’m having an electronic one
fitted to my (real) mini which translates movement to digital.

GPS can be used to supply a reading too - some with a form of intelligence for
tunnels

Steve,

What is the basic principal behind the measurement of speed these days.
According to Wikipedia, the normal method is to measure the rotational speed of
the drive shaft or the wheel electronically and from that to infer the speed.
There are of course other techniques using the Doppler effect when some form of
signal is bounced off the road, but I suspect that the electronics behind that
is more complex than a simple pulse counter.

They don’t make cas with mechanical mileometers/speedos anymore Martin - that
ship sailed almost decades ago

Sweden is safer and they drive on the other side. But I don’t think that has
much to with it. Many accidents here in France with people driving on the wrong

This particular article is 11 years old, so pre Brexit.

The above website list comments on which side would be best to drive on in the
UK. But further down are comments, one of which is to sort out the “muddled
measurements” in the UK. (Below Alex, Birmingham.

With the Brits around here in France, I’ve noticed it’s cheaper to buy a
comparable used car in the UK, but more expensive to buy new in the UK. I
figure it must have something to do with the market available for both new and
used in the UK compared to the rest of Europe. Never mind the accidents from
Brits starting out in the countryside here on the wrong side.
