Hi,
I would recommend you make it clear in the petition that Britain's
decision to go metric had nothing to do with being a member of the EU.
This is a common misconception, and the fact that the UK has left the
Union might suggest that the reason for metrication is no longer there.
In fact, the decision to go metric in the UK was made in 1965 [1] (I
believe along with the rest of the Commonwealth) long before membership
of the EEC (as the EU was then) in 1973. This misconception extends
into senior government positions (or is deliberately propagated by
them), for example when Jacob Rees-Mogg as part of the Brexit
preparations instructed civil servants to use imperial measure [2],
despite the fact that metrication was a British decision, and not
something that was forced on them from abroad.

Hi, everyone,
A concerned citizen named Jordan Crane has started a Parliamentary
petition asking that the UK should complete its metrication. If it
reaches 10 000 signatures the government must respond to it, and at
100 000 or more it must be considered for debate in Parliament.
The petition is on the British Parliament’s web site at:

I found it on Reddit’s Metric forum and any comments will be here:

Any British members of this email list will obviously want to sign it,
which is why I have posted it here, and I have dropped a line to the
UKMA. Are there any other avenues for promoting this petition online?
Best wishes,

(To answer any questions; In the UK road distances and speed limits
are still officially displayed as miles and miles per hour; milk,
draught beer and cider are still sold in pints, and it is still legal
to display prices per Imperial pound (or other measure,) although
goods must be sold in metric units. Also, the media still use a lot of
Imperial units. If i am wrong in any of this, please let me know.)
