** Caution: EXTERNAL Sender **

A few years ago, when in Germany, I bought a domestic digital indoor/outdoor
thermometer. It looked as though it was made for the international market and
had a C/F switch. I did a series of test and came to the conclusion that it had
a 10-bit ADC with one bit equal to 0.1 degree Celsius. The Fahrenheit display
was a conversion of the Celsius display. The give-away? The Celsius display
ramped up in 0,1 degree increments while the Fahrenheit display ramped up in a
series of five 0.2 degree steps followed by a 0'1 degree step.

Many thermostats are dual-scale, I’ve set mine to degrees C.

Yesterday the repairman came to fix the air conditioner and saw that the
thermostat was displaying 27 (it's been up to 33) and wanted to switch it to
Fahrenheit. I told him I don't use Fahrenheit. He said he's seen a fair number
of thermostats set to Celsius. How common is it for thermostats in the USA to
display in Celsius?

The symptom was the same as the last time he came out: the fan motor was
quivering instead of turning. The cause, though, was different. Last time he
had to replace the whole fan/motor assembly because the windings were broken.
This time it was just a faulty capacitor.
