** Caution: EXTERNAL Sender **

In many digital devices, the Fahrenheit scale is an approximation to the
Celsius scale. A number of years ago I bought a domestic quality digital
indoor/outdoor thermometer which had a °C/°F switch. Its range was from -50°C
to +50 °C. I did a number of tests on it, including checking he increments
when I held the probe between my fingers. I noticed that when it was switched
to °C, the indicated temperature went up in increments of 0.1°C, but when it
was set to °F, it went up in increments of 0.2 °F for four successive
increments, followed by a single increment of 0.1 °F. This cycle repeated
itself.

This told me that the device was designed around a 10 bit ADV (1024 distinct
values of which 1001 were used) with one bit being equal to 0.1°C. The
Fahrenheit display was generated using firmware within the device.

Many thermostats are dual-scale, I’ve set mine to degrees C.
