At a guess, the cisco brand name, cisco IOS, management ability,
stackability (the ability to configure multiple switches as a single
unit), and the two XL slots (which you can put GigE or fiber
connections in).
If you're looking for a good quality switch to compete with the cisco,
though, I'd look at HP's ProCurve product line. Something like the 2524
(available for under $600) or something from the 2600 series. The 4000
has a good price point vs. number of ports (40 ports for $1800... that's
less than the price you quoted above for the cisco 3524, plus an
additional five slots!).
