Hello again folks!
The saga continues on my '85 Vmax. She's still immobile, but she has fresh
plugs,
oil filter, oil, coolant, and battery. She still needs carbs, airbox, top
cover, air scoops,
brake and clutch master cylinders, and a passenger seat. All of her locks work!
Last night I put the key into the gas tank lock, stuck a screwdriver into one of
the
grooves in the lock for extra mechanical advantage, and turned the lock 90
degrees.
It came off! The lock was covered with an orange coat of lacquer from the
skunky
gas. Cleaned it with no problem. Thanks Brad, Tyler, Rick, Jim, Bryan, Henry,
et al.
However, when I shone my flashlight into the tank (half-full of old, old orange
gas), I
noticed lots of debris in the bottom of the tank and some surface rust around
the lip.
I'm sure the interior of the tank is covered with lacquer from the decayed gas.
Does the service manual detail the removal / install of a gas tank? Anything I
should
know that's not covered in the manual? Has anyone had the pleasure of cleaning
out
an old gas tank? What chemicals do you recommend?
Regards,
Kevin
