Kevin,
I have not had to clean my gas tank but I did have to remove it and have it welded
up because I picked up a piece of metal with my tire that punctured the sub-fender
and the gas tank.
What you will have to do is remove the seat to get to the mounting hardware and
disconnect the fuel lines to the top of the tank.
Remove the rear fender and sub-fender and rear wheel.
Remove the left side plate (the one that says Vmax below the seat).
Remove the frame brace on left side, goes from just under the seat to just above the
swing arm pivot.
Now you should be able to remove the gas tank with some creative maneuvering and
wiggling.
If the gas tank is rusted after a good wash down & cleaning, don't bother using the
tank restoring miracle creams or liquids as these will eventually decay and clog
your filters and/or carbs. My personal opinion would be to replace the tank with a
new one.
